The following are artworks I created while taking the Time Based Media course in the Art Education Department at Concordia University.

FINAL PROJECTS

STOP MOTION ANIMATION PROJECT

Tea-Rex (2022)

I challenged myself with the concept “word as pun” to explore a playful way of visually expressing a different meaning of a word. I look around my house and imagined what objects would do if they magically came to life when nobody was looking. I chose the pun “Tea-Rex” and animated a toy T-rex stealing a tea bag– my favorite drink in to a  looping GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)  animation. I took the photos using an  Iphone  and imported them into Photoshop to create a smooth and seamless looping animation.

VIDEO COLLAGE PROJECT

Stardust (2022)

The concept of this video collage emerged around ideas related to the big bang, earth, consciousness, perception, universal connectedness, and time. It is an expression of an uncertain and impermanent existence in a beautiful, fleeting, and mysterious universe. I was inspired from the prompt “Embodied perception of time and space”.  I explored filming with  a variety of viewpoints and composition techniques. In post production (Adobe Premiere) I experimented with different cuts, transitions, blending modes, effects, layering and used temporality to signal meaning. I narrated and added sound effects, text and music to emphasize the visuals and mood.

SOUND ART PROJECT

Water Walk (2022)

The concept of this sound project emerged around springtime with the melting snow, as a metaphor for “waking-up”. In this sound art project a person decides to follow their curiosity and jump into the sewer system to follow a strange sound. I took an exploratory sound walk and followed my ears as they dictated which direction to point the mic, what to record and on thr sonic discovery of my neighborhood. I collected a variety of street sounds and I experimented with different cuts, transitions, effects (panner, convolution reverb, phaser, echo and delay), and layering to make the sound feel rich and full of texture. I also added a few sound effects to add context and strengthen storytelling.

INSTALLATION GROUP PROJECT

INTENTIONS (2022)

Collaborative piece by Élisabeth Laganière, Kim Gagnon and Laïla Breger

This installation was a response to the incredibly stressful times we are living in and was intended to empower viewers with a liberating, introspective and participatory experience. This installation uses a variety of mixed media, technology and performance to create a unique conceptual experience to be enjoyed in person and virtually. In stressful times, self-care can take a backseat. This performance/installation was meant to give an opportunity for people to slow down, to look inward and to manifest a new intention.

PERFORMANCE
Performance Artist: Laïla Breger

We invited viewers to a hearth made from lights and textiles and to participate in somatic grounding exercise to better engage in the themes explored in the installation. This portion of the installation served to introduce viewers to the theme of the installation and loosely guide them through the process.

MIXED MEDIA INSTALLATION

The art installation was composed of two participatory and interactive artworks that hung before a video projection of imagery that reflected the theme of each station– let go and wish. Viewers were invited to project their intention onto the let go artwork (on the left), break off a piece of the sculpture, destroy it and finally, symbolically let it go by dropping it on the ground. The artwork on the right serves as a collective decorative vessel and will become adorned with an artistic offering from each participant which will contain the essence of their intention.

EXPLORATORY WORKSHOPS

GIF EXPLORATORY WORKSHOP

Treat Time (2022)

The challenge of this in-classworkshop was to create two “daily movements” GIF’s of the same movement through a very close and very wide shot type. Using the IMG Play app, I edited two GIF’s showing different perspectives of doggy treat time. It took multiple takes to successfully create a smooth loop, luck for my, the actors were very will participants.

GIF EXPLORATORY WORKSHOP

B-R-E-A-T-H-E (2022)

The challenge of this in-class workshop was to create an animation of a “Word as image”. My Concept was to make the word BREATHE look like it was expanding and contracting similar to a set of lungs.  This looping animation was created using the text tool in Adobe Photoshop.  I experimented animating the word by using the “text” and the “warp text” tools, the layers pallet and the animation feature.

STOP MOTION EXPLORATORY WORKSHOP

MAGIC! The Book is Alive (2022)

This was an in-class workshop to explore the Stop Motion Studio Studio App and create a short stop motion looping video that had a concept. Following the prompt “My book comes alive”. I came up with a concept to point at the word MAGIC and the books magically come alive and create a perpetual looping magical “wave” of books.

SOUND ART EXPLORATORY WORKSHOP

Sound Walk at Concordia University (2022)

This was an in-class workshop where we went on a sound walk around Concordia University. I used  a sound recorder and headphones to experience the environment through listening.  I wandered around campus for 20 minutes looking to capture a variety of sounds with different textures, rhythms and contrasting properties. I recorded ambient noise, elevator sounds, someone purchasing a drink from a vending machine, someone walking with metal studs on their boots and a variety of other sounds. Using Audacity I experimented with arranging the sounds into a rich, layered sonic  interpretation of the environment.
